course description:

LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) Psychology is a new area of psychological research and clinical practice that focuses on the psychological experiences of individuals who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities. The aim of this course is to offer a survey of contemporary issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) community, with a focus on psychological perspectives and mental health.  Topics to be covered include same-sex desire and identity development, functioning of same-sex couples and families headed by same-sex couples, current debates about the etiology of sexual orientation, and the effects of discrimination on the mental health of LGBTQ individuals. The course offers the opportunity to touch on a variety of existing psychological areas, such as developmental, social, clinical, history, and human sexuality from the unique perspective of LGBTQ experiences.

Methods of assessment will include (but are not limited to): Small writing assignments based on the assigned readings (e.g., reading journal, reflection papers, thought questions); in-class participation and attendance, a final paper (e.g., a research proposal or research paper); potential service-learning opportunities; potential in-class debates or hands-on research experience.

Advanced preparation

Reviewing the content of Psyc 240 (Social Psychology) would be useful, especially for students who have not taken Psyc240, as many Social Psychology constructs will be covered in this course. Other course material that would be useful to review would include Psyc 260 and Psyc 290 (Developmental Psychology and Research Methods). On the more 'fun' side, watching documentaries and films about LGBTQ history and culture will help to give you a familiarity with some of the topics we will be addressing from a psychological perspective. Suggested films and books are listed below.

Below are some resources you can use for reviewing foundational concepts in Social Psychology:

  1. There is a free online Social Psychology Course through Coursera. The course is not “live” anymore, but all of the material is still available, including the lectures, assignments, and exams.

  2. UC Berkeley’s Social Psychology course from 2014 is available online through youtube.

  3. In combination with either of the above, there is also a free online textbook for Social Psychology that can be found here.

Required Texts:

Most of the readings for this course will consist of journal articles which will be provided to you.
